Vaporesso Gen Max review, the spec sheet checked against published tests

The Vaporesso Gen Max got people talking about one part, a fire button that rotates and replaces the adjustment buttons. Around that dial, spec sheets disagree on the weight, the default mode and even the list of modes, and the published reviews do not flag the same weaknesses. We set the manufacturer's page against several retailer listings and five detailed reviews to separate what holds up from what is sales copy.

The Gen Max at a glance, with the spec sheet cross-checked

The Gen Max is a dual 18650 box mod, cells not included, adjustable from 5 to 220 W and driven by Vaporesso's AXON chip. Sold as a kit with the iTank T sub-ohm tank, it is built for high-wattage direct-lung vaping. Its defining feature is the dial built into the fire button, while the flaws reviewers report come down to bulk, a lock that freezes everything and a cramped battery bay.

The table separates what Vaporesso publishes from what only retailer listings or reviews state.

Vaporesso lists the iTank T at 6 ml with its bubble glass. UK rules cap refillable tanks at 2 ml, and none of the sources we read describes a compliant version of this tank. The capacity printed on the box of the kit you buy is the only figure that counts.

Weight and default mode, where the sources disagree

The weight of the Vaporesso Gen Max varies by more than 80 g depending on the page. Vaporesso gives 196 g, a figure two reviews repeat, while a third quotes 114 g for the mod. None of the sources says whether cells or the tank are included, which could explain the gap. Only the manufacturer's figure is backed by more than one source.

The out-of-the-box mode raises the same problem. Vaporesso's page presents Pulse as the default, while one review and a user guide published by a retailer both name F(t). The list of modes moves too. Two reviews name the same five modes, F(t), Smart, Eco, VV and Pulse, a third also counts five, and a fourth adds a DIY mode that nobody else reports.

A dial in place of buttons

The whole user experience of the Gen Max rests on a single control. The dial fires the coil, switches modes and sets the wattage, and a slider beneath it locks the device, showing LOCKED or UNLOCKED on screen.

That lock blocks both firing and adjustments, with no halfway setting that freezes only the wattage. It is the control reviewers discuss most, split between those who praise its simplicity and those who worry about a setting changing by accident when the mod is put away unlocked. Their views are set out below, review by review.

Vaporesso Gen Max power and GTi coils

The 220 W of the Vaporesso Gen Max sit far above what the supplied tank needs. Vaporesso publishes a wattage range for each GTi coil in the iTank T, shown below.

GTi Mesh coil Recommended range Best setting
0.15 ohm 75 to 90 W 85 W
0.2 ohm 60 to 75 W 65 W
0.4 ohm 50 to 60 W 55 W
0.5 ohm 30 to 40 W 35 W

The hungriest coil tops out at 90 W, which leaves 130 W of headroom below the mod's ceiling. Every GTi coil therefore fits within its range, the 0.15 ohm included, which is not the case on devices capped at 60 or 80 W. The spare power mainly matters to anyone fitting a rebuildable atomiser with a very low-resistance build.

That headroom comes with a trade-off. Battery drain depends first on the coil and the wattage chosen, and Eco mode is designed to keep it in check. To pick cells suited to these currents, our guide to 21700 and 18650 batteries explains what to look for on a cell datasheet.

What published reviews report, one by one

Five detailed reviews, all in French, were published between July and August 2024 by specialist media and online shops. They agree on flavour with the GTi coils and split clearly on the weaknesses, so each is read separately.

Vaping Post, top marks

This review awards top marks without listing any fault, noting only that the fill port refuses the bulkiest bottle nozzles. It describes a muted click at each step of the dial, just as comfortable for left- and right-handed users, strong magnets on the back door and reverse polarity protection. It is the source of the 114 g figure for the mod, and it recommends a 23 mm atomiser while finding that a 25 mm tank still looks right.

Arômes et Liquides, the harshest

The Arômes et Liquides review names F(t) as the default mode and lists the five common modes. It reports a screen that looks round but is in fact rectangular, animations that cannot be switched off even in Eco mode, a battery bay with little room to grip the cells, which sit in opposite directions, and an iTank T that is heavy for its class. Its reviewer also warns that vaping at full power drains a set of cells quickly, without publishing a measurement.

Oneshot Media, direct lung only

Oneshot Media calls the dial rather clever but finds the kit bulky and heavy once both cells are fitted, with flavour less precise than on hardware designed for mouth-to-lung vaping. That review restricts the Gen Max to direct or restricted direct-lung vaping with low-nicotine e-liquids, gives 28.5 mm as the maximum flush atomiser diameter and advises against the 0.15 ohm coil on the Gen SE.

E-Fumeur, a dial that turns too freely

E-Fumeur finds the rotation a little too loose, and that reviewer considers a setting could change by accident if the mod goes into a bag unlocked. The review also regrets the lack of an option that freezes only the wattage, which means unlocking the mod before every puff.

Neovapo, the extra DIY mode

Neovapo is the only review to mention a DIY mode. It rates the flavour well with the GTi coils and finds the lock slider handier than the three quick presses of older Gen models.

Gen Max or Gen SE, which one to pick

Vaporesso offers the same platform as the Gen SE, a single 18650 mod capped at 80 W. The manufacturer gives it 161 g, a width of 35.6 mm instead of 49.7 mm and a 3 ml iTank T. The 0.15 ohm coil makes little sense on it, since its range starts at 75 W, just below the mod's ceiling.

The Gen Max therefore suits anyone who wants the whole GTi range and the spare power, in exchange for a much wider body. The Gen SE keeps the same dial in a narrower shell, for more moderate direct-lung vaping. If you are unsure which resistance to aim for, our guide on how to choose a vape coil walks through the logic of ohms.

FAQ

These answers cover practical points that retailer pages tend to leave out.

How do you switch the Gen Max on and off? The user guide published by the retailer Evaps describes five quick, successive presses of the fire button, and the same gesture switches it off. Turning the dial then scrolls through modes and settings.

Which way do the cells go in? The two 18650 cells sit in opposite directions, following the polarity marks given in the manual. In a dual-cell mod, cells of the same model, age and charge level are used together as a pair.

What tank diameter does the mod take? Vaporesso gives the top a width of 28.5 mm, which sets the widest atomiser that sits flush with the mod. Anything narrower fits the 510 connector without trouble.

Which coils fit the iTank T? The tank uses Vaporesso's GTi range, in 0.15, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.5 ohm. The kit includes the 0.2 and 0.4 ohm, and the other two values are sold separately.

Is the Gen Max suited to mouth-to-lung vaping? No, the kit is built for direct lung, with an iTank T whose highest coil is 0.5 ohm. A mouth-to-lung tank can be fitted to the mod, but it then offers little over a more compact device. In the UK, nicotine e-liquid is capped at 20 mg/ml in bottles of up to 10 ml.

What to take away from the Vaporesso Gen Max

Once the sources are cross-checked, the Gen Max comes down to a dual 18650 mod rated at 220 W, a dial that replaces the buttons and compatibility with the full GTi range, 0.15 ohm included. The gaps in weight and default mode between sources are a reminder that a retailer listing is no substitute for the manual.

Its limits are well documented, from a wide body and an all-or-nothing lock to fixed animations and a tight battery bay. For an experienced direct-lung vaper who wants spare power, the Vaporesso Gen Max remains a coherent choice among dual-cell mods.
